Music

Practice, patience and a seat in the band.

Aiden started piano at four, played viola in third and fourth grade and switched to the euphonium in fifth grade. That’s the one he plays now, in Fay’s Concert Band.

Along the way

Piano first, then viola, then the euphonium.

Age 4

Piano

His first instrument, started at age four. Aiden still plays the piano at home for fun.

Grades 3 and 4

Viola

He played viola at Field School in Weston. This year his younger sister, Alice, started viola too, and Aiden has been helping her learn.

Fifth grade onward

Euphonium

Picked up in fifth grade and still going. Between practice and rehearsals, it’s about three hours a week.

Euphonium

One part. A shared sound.

The euphonium rarely carries the melody. Its job is to hold the middle of the band together, which takes as much listening as playing. Below, he plays with Fay’s Concert Band last year.

“When I was at Weston during our giant concert, I saw the other players and how the bigger brass pulled the music together. I like playing a part where I’m helping all the other instruments. Plus it’s really big, which is pretty cool.”
